“At the Partners in Learning Global Forum, I would expect the unexpected. You’re blown away by what other people can do with very little resource and support available to them.” – Joli Barker and Jamie Ewing, USA

The recent ISTE conference exposed some incredibly exciting education technology innovation, but it was just as rewarding for me to have the opportunity to meet new colleagues and catch up with familiar ones. In the latter category, Microsoft Innovative Educators Jamie Ewing and Joli Barker, both recent Daily Edventures alumni, sat down with me in San Antonio last month to talk about what they learned at ISTE, and what they’re looking forward to at the next Partners in Learning Global Forum in Barcelona.

Both teachers have benefitted greatly from their participation in Partners in Learning and the Global Forums, and the experiences continue to pay dividends as they face everyday challenges in their classrooms. In Ewing’s case, those challenges include adopting the new Common Core standards. “Common Core is going to force teachers to rethink how they’re teaching,” Ewing says. “It forces you to do a lot more project-based learning, and a lot more integration of technology – not just sitting in front of a computer.”

For Barker, ongoing collaboration with her Partners in Learning peers has helped her to successfully implement 1-to-1 learning. And she freely shares that experience with the same peers. Barker emphasizes, “I just want to make sure that teachers realize that you cannot have a 1-to-1 roll-out and just repackage the old teaching methods in prettier, digitalized packaging.”

For both Ewing and Barker, the insights they’ve gained through global collaboration have certainly made them better teachers.  According to Barker, “The Global Forum lifted my confidence as a teacher and changed who I was as a teacher, and my approach.”
