“I hope that every teacher would want to (evolve) – to not think, ‘I have been teaching for 20 years, I’m not going to move on.’ Everyone has to move on.” – Jenni Kansala, Finland

If there’s one thing that rings true about Microsoft’s E2 Global Educator Exchange, it’s that the Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts (MIEE) are truly gifted and inspirational.

Jenni Kansala, an MIEE from Finland, is a perfect example of the incredible talent guiding our students today.

Interestingly, technology in the classroom is not widely used yet in Finland. Kansala’s school began using Surface devices about a year ago (she’s now a Surface expert), with OneNote at the core of products she relies on. In fact, Kansala loves OneNote so much, she knitted some OneNote mittens, socks and keychains.

“There are three of us (teachers) and we have 65 students,” she says. “We are teaching (our students) all together, and we are planning together.” In Finland, co-teaching is common, which of course means co-planning is a necessity. “When we plan together, we don’t have to actually be together,” notes Kansala. “With OneNote, I can be at home.”

Kansala has also noticed a transformation in how her students collaborate with OneNote, offering feedback of their own, and learning from one another in their OneNote Class Notebooks. “OneNote is really good for that,” she adds.

Her advice for fellow educators?

“I learn everyday,” she says. “It’s really nice to see our students – how quickly they learn. I don’t have to know everything…I hope that every teacher would want to (evolve) – to not think, ‘I have been teaching for 20 years, I’m not going to move on.’ Everyone has to move on.”

Today, Kansala shares her advice for bringing technology and devices into the classroom, as well as a peek inside the world of education in Finland (a country that consistently leads globally in the PISA exams), and how developing 21st century skills is a constant challenge – no matter where you live.
