As a Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) Master Trainer, Waqas Shafique has helped thousands of Pakistan’s educators transform their classrooms with technology. Through his work, many more thousands of students have learned to think critically, build knowledge, and solve real-world community problems. He’s also the only Certified Microsoft Innovative Educator Fellow in Pakistan. And he’s just getting started.

“The lesson I take away throughout the struggle of helping students and teachers and creating impact in their lives is that sometimes things seem to be difficult,” he tells us. “But to move in the right direction, the only thing you need is what I call the 3D Model — you need Drive, you need Direction, and you need Discipline to create impact and see the results.”

Millennium Education and its brand, Future World School, are the top chain of schools in Pakistan with over 1200 teachers and 13,000 students. As a MIE Master Trainer, Shafique trains teachers and students on Office 365, Microsoft Azure, Minecraft Education Edition, and more. He also introduces teachers to resources like the Microsoft Educator Community and Microsoft Imagine Academy. And students at the schools are actively participating in events like Hack-a-Thon, Skype-a-Thon, Hour of Code, and Computer Science week. He does all of this with the support of his team of 53 Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts from Millennium Education.

In the last two years alone, Shafique has trained over 1000 educators. Out of those, 850 are MIEs and 336 are MIE Experts (MIEE), with more working on their certifications. He’s also served as a Team Lead in rolling out Microsoft Education in campuses across the country. That kind of scale is making a big impact.

“We upgraded the ICT curriculum for grades 1-7 by embedding Microsoft tools and technologies in existing curriculum,” he explains. “Now the latest curriculum is in the hands of students, and they are learning innovative technologies and 21st century skills. This really helped our big educator community to learn best practices and tools.”

After working with a number of education institutions in Pakistan, Shafique believes their biggest challenge is the traditional curriculum and the lack of technology to make learning fun and engaging. One of Shafique’s favorite classroom activities is a critical thinking project using OneNote that asks students to consider what they would do in an emergency situation. He’s created a Sway to highlight the activity’s digital assets.

“Through online and one-to-one sessions, I am making educators aware that ICT cuts across subjects and builds the capacity of teachers, students, and school leaders through Microsoft STEM programs,” says Shafique. “I’m also spreading my knowledge, skills, and experience to a larger audience with a YouTube channel for educators.”
